“The Creator” Review

The Creator: Directed by Gareth Edwards. With John David Washington, Madeleine Yuna Voyles, Gemma Chan, Allison Janney. Against the backdrop of a war between humans and robots with artificial intelligence, a former soldier finds the secret weapon, a robot in the form of a young child.

There’s a lot to like about this film, it has a gorgeous visual pallet, an interesting back story, an amazing world built for the characters, and a premise that really made me want to see it opening day, but sadly I don’t think it delivered on the high expectations. My main complaint is where the plot actually went and the fear to actually address artificial intelligence as something to be both feared and appreciated, but it instead gets wrapped up in an attempt at a multi-layered allusion to racism, colonialism, imperialism, parenthood, and technology. It’s fine to cover a few of those things, but it’s still a bit much for just a two hour film to try to cram in. I think it would have worked better as a 10 part mini series on one of the premium streaming channels to cover each of these items in an hour long episode.

I still suggest seeing this in theaters due to the visual spectacle that really does impress, just know that the plot suggested in the trailers isn’t fully realized in the final product.
