“Moontrap” Review

| Amazon

Directed by Robert Dyke. With Walter Koenig, Bruce Campbell, Leigh Lombardi, Robert Kurcz. The Space Shuttle returns to earth, but some of the equipment brought back on it begins to behave strangely. Scientists are unsure what is happening, and decide to take all necessary precautions.

Low budget but extremely high aspirations with aliens that over 14,000 years old, this is equal parts Screamers, Hardware, and The Right Stuff. The low budget stays out of the way for the most part, but it’s really through the saving grace of having Walter Koenig in the film that elevates it to a must watch for campy science fiction fans. It’s a shame that he didn’t take the same carrier path as his co-star in this film, as he shows that he definitely has the chops for it. Imagine a universe where we had two people of that caliber out there making great campy scifi!

I only watched this because Mr Koenig mentioned it in one of his recent books and he recounted that there was a scene in which a female costar took off her top and he made a solemn vow to her to just look at her eyes and not the more obvious things that he could be watching out for, like murderous robots from The Moon. True to his word, the scene in question featured him staring at her pretty eyes instead of her other assets that she was unleashing.
