“Chopping Mall” Review

| Amazon

Directed by Jim Wynorski. With Kelli Maroney, Tony O’Dell, Russell Todd, Karrie Emerson. A group of young shopping mall employees stay behind for a late night party in one of the stores. When the mall goes on lock-down before they can get out, the robot security system malfunctions, and goes on a killing spree.

The movie was originally released in March 1986 under the title “Killbots.”, but it turns out that bots that kill people are too much for audiences of that fragile time period, so it was re-released as “Chopping Mall”, which as a lover of puns I fully endorse the name change. It was filmed in Sherman Oaks Galleria, the same mall used in Commando (1985), so you know that there’s at least a good stage set for a quality movie here. Mind you Roger Corman produced the film, so there’s a pedigree that it lives up to in it’s cheesy / low budget raunchiness, with practical effects that are actually some of the best i’ve seen in a Corman science fiction flick.

I do wonder what happened to those murder bots after the film was done though, are they sitting in someone’s garage being gawked at by people that don’t know their true value?
